Habitat Restoration

s

The Quatse River has been NVISEA’s focus for habitat restoration during the summers of 2004 through 2006. Forty-two large woody debris (LWD) and thirteen boulder structures were installed over 3.4 km beginning 930m from the Quatse’s tidal boundary. This created approximately 13,570 m² of enhanced habitat at a cost of $135,882.28.

Funding partners were significant and included the Pacific Salmon Foundation, BHP-Billiton, Habitat Conservation Trust Fund, Greater Georgia Basin Steelhead Recovery Program, Ministry of Transportation, B.C. Hydro, Kwakuitl First Nation, Port Hardy Fish and Game Club, and Weyerhaeuser. Community in-kind contributions came from Boris Mechanical, K. Pearson Contracting, Rockpro, Spike Top Cedar Products, Mill and Timber Products, JMC Forest Maintenance and the Quatse River Campground.

These activities fully implemented all feasible structures prescribed in the 2003 LGL report titled “ Fish Habitat Assessments and Rehabilitation Designs for the Quatse River Watershed, B.C.” In total 168 LWD pieces, 63 rootwads, and 411 boulders were added as habitat to the Quatse River. The rehabilitation designs target primarily the rearing and overwintering habitats of salmonids, in particular Coho Salmon, Steelhead/Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout. Secondarily, the structures will stabilize the channel and reduce sediment input.
