Quatse River Hatchery

Quatse River Hatchery

NVISEA’s Quatse River Hatchery is located five minutes from Port Hardy in the Regional District of Mount Waddington’s Quatse River Regional Park.

The Quatse River Hatchery is staffed by four full time personnel, with additional seasonal staff of up to twelve.

The facility was originally constructed in 1983, with a number of upgrades through the years to get to the present layout.

The Quatse Hatchery has an incubation capacity for one million Coho eggs using twenty-four heath stacks and for 2.5 million Pink eggs using eight Pallant boxes.

For juvenile rearing we utilize twelve Capilano troughs, eight 12’ circular tanks, and three
5’ x 30’ concrete raceways. For adult brood holding all the circular tanks and raceways are used.

The hatchery uses two water sources. Submerged pumps draw river water from a screened intake, utilized primarily for adult holding and bulk Pink incubation. A gravity fed groundwater source is used primarily for heath incubation and juvenile rearing.
