NVISEA

Production

NVISEA operates under a Federal DFO contract with the Salmon Enhancement Program’s Community Economic Development Program (CEDP). This provides core operational funding for NVISEA’s hatchery activities and Salmon production. Four species of Pacific Salmon and seven North Island drainages are enhanced through NVISEA’s CEDP activities.

NVISEA is also provincially funded for Steelhead trout enhancement by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. Two winter-run stocks, Quatse and Cluxewe, and one summer-run stock, Campbell Tsitika transplant, are currently being enhanced.

All Steelhead fry and smolts and all Coho smolts produced by NVISEA are adipose clipped for hatchery identification. This allows identification of the hatchery component of the returning population. Production parameters can be adjusted according to hatchery to wild ratios. Adipose clipped identification allows retention fisheries, both marine and freshwater, for hatchery produced fish. NVISEA hatchery production is utilized in both recreational and commercial marine fisheries, recreational freshwater fisheries and First Nation traditional fisheries. Local economic opportunities created by NVISEA's production include terminal marine fisheries for Coho and Pink salmon and freshwater fisheries for Coho and Steelhead.
